His musical journey began in Vicksburg, Mississippi, in the heart of the Delta, where he was born. He was in the church choir as a young person and used to sing tenor, baritone and bass. He jokes that he wasn’t allowed to sing the “rough stuff” like rock and roll in those days and that he was only allowed to sing gospel. He’d have to “slip away” to sing secular songs. Terry secretly listened to people like Elmore James, Little Walter, Albert King and B.B. King, to name a few. It was then that he decided he wanted be a soul singer.

In the sixties, Terry worked with an a cappella group called The Knights, touring throughout the South in clubs and juke joints. From there Terry was lured to the west coast where he first picked up the guitar, started writing music and soon became a prolific songwriter. Pops Staples as well as the late, great Louis Jordan (among others) have recorded his songs.

Long before Terry made his first recording fronting his own band, music fans were probably well acquainted with his amazing voice. For years, the soulful singer was one of Los Angeles’ foremost session vocalists, receiving a gold record for his work on John Fogarty’s “Eye of the Zombie” and recording with Ry Cooder, Joan Armatrading, John Lee Hooker, Boz Scaggs, Maria Muldaur, Pops Staples, and many other well respected artists.

He teamed up with singer Bobby King in the early seventies; they toured as a duo, appearing at many prestigious clubs and festivals. In 1976 when Ry Cooder was looking for background singers, Bobby King recommended Terry. Their distinctive voices became a feature of several of Ry’s critically acclaimed albums, including “Chicken Skin Music,” “Get Rhythm,” “Show Time,” and “Slide Area.” Bobby and Terry were still touring as a duo during this time. Terry sang lead vocal on “Down in Mississippi” on the “Crossroads” movie soundtrack album, with Ry singing the title song. In the actual film, Terry sings the title song. Terry toured with Ry Cooder throughout the U.S., Europe and Japan and credits Ry for being a great inspiration to him in his musical efforts since being in California.

In addition to his work with other artists, Terry recorded two albums with Bobby King, as well as seven of his own. He is now touring with his own band, and his latest album “Fire In The Feelin’” was released in 2005 on CrossCut Records. The next one is yet to come…, watch out!

Ry Cooder has said that he always thought that his long time singer, Terry Evans, made a better “front man.” To see him perform is to understand why. Terry is one of the most dynamic soul and blues singers performing today, writing and singing about all aspects of human emotion, and creating a connection with his audience in the process.

There is a risk in forms with drop down selects.

Scenario

You have a field which can be edited by selecting from a drop down
This drop down has no option for "nil-value"

When such a form gets rendered, the first option of the drop down is selected if the current value of the field is not in the list of options. Saving this form without changing anything will still update the field behind the drop down. That's definitely not what the user will expect here.

After trying a lot of different JS-libs for chart-drawing, I made my decision: HighChart for my Darts Log Application (See Example).

HighChart is free for non-commercial applications and there is a fine Railscast how to use it in a Rails-Application.

I couldn't resist from trying it. Fazit: Faaaast! Some gems I use not available for 3.2, tho. I'm looking forward to move CBA to 3.2 within some weeks.

GPGTools are back!

My GnuPGP encryption is back with Lion’s Mail.

When I installed Mac OS X Lion Preview, I lost GnuPGP in Mail and then, when Lion comes out with the first official release, l forgot to care about PGP until I need to decrypt an old mail today.

Fortunately GPGTools are back for Apple Mail, even in Lion & it works well.

Installation was painless and all my old keys are there, ready to use again.

Web Application Template is a Rails-application, created from RailsApp, extended with:

- and/or a local omniauth-Identity
Views redesigned with Twitter-bootstrap

You can fork or clone this App from Github

After download and bundle you can start tests and the local webserver with

I just switched the capybara-driver from selenium to webkit in my Rails 3.2.2 application / WAT

I was so tired watching this firefox-window popping up several times each time running the rspec-suite. With capybara-webkit it's so much faster and so less boring now.

On Mac OS X

... I had to install some things, tho. I did this from within my rvm-environment for the WAT-project.

  cd ~/Development/wat # move to your project's root-path
  rvm use 1.9.2-p290@rails32  # use the propper rvm-environment
  ## change the two lines above to fit your needs

  rvmsudo brew install Qt
  rvmsudo gem install capybara-webkit

And now it worked just as mentioned in all the docs and blogs out there:

Add the gem to your Gemfile

  group :test do
   ...
   gem 'capybara-webkit'
   ...
  end

Then

  bundle

And finally config capybara to use the webkit-driver.

Change file spec/spec_helper and add the following lines

 ....
 RSpec.configure do |config|
      ...
      config.before(:suite) do
         ....
         Capybara.javascript_driver = :webkit
      end
      ... 
  end
  ....

Here is an example how you can test a controller with Ajax-requests

    it "switches personal information and authentication providers", :js => true, :driver => :webkit do
      visit user_path(@user1)
      click_link 'Personal information'
      page.should have_content "No personal information stored yet"
      click_link 'Assign authentication providers'
      page.should have_content "Identity"
    end

both click_link actions clicks on a link with :remote => true which end's up in a remote-call to the server. If I remove the :js => true-parameter from the spec the test will fail obviously.

The RailsConf2012 was held in Hilton Hotel, Austin, TX

Here I'll collect some photos and links according to the RailsConf. A great hug to organizers and sponsors. The conf was great and especially the OpenBarEvents were exciting as each year ;-)
